My Vows

Dear Arunita,

I’ve never written vows before and I’ve certainly never been married,

But if there’s anyone in the world I would dream to wed,

It would, without a doubt, be you. So I’ll try my best but I know that however well (or not well) I do, you’ll love them and me anyways.

It’s the moment we’re looking up at the stars when I knew.

I knew you were the one.

Because what is usually such a humbling and ‘putting me in my place moment,’

Right there, at the doorstep of grand galaxies and celestial nebulas

Is where I feel the biggest. Because you’re there. And you’re one with it all.

I vow to remember and respect your divinity, and never to take away from it.

It’s when I wake up from healing and nourishing slumber or a cot of nightmares,

And catch a glance of your frazzled hair and puffy cheeks and semi-swollen lips,

Murmuring over your to-do list.

Where I realise, this is beauty! This is divinity! This is where I’m meant to be!

I vow to discover your beauty in all that you are and all that you look.

It is every minute of the mundane we get together,

Writing essays, intense yoga sessions, shaving legs, crying, baking brownies,

Whatever it is that we do.

I vow to enjoy and savour the blessing that is your time and never allow anyone to waste it.

When you’re sick and sniffly, exhausted or enraged,

Battling a tsunami of the inevitable displeasures that come with the human experience,

Or just not having the best hair day.

I vow to be there through it all. To be truly present, to be truly listening, to be truly there.

It is when I realise that we are quite literally in this for life, however long it may be,

That it hits me,

There is no one else I would rather be with. That it will be an interesting and colourful, deep and meaningful life that we will create together because we are doing the creating, and wow do we have some dank creative energy and open Sacral Chakras.

I vow to savour it all.

My dear Arunita,

I love you. With all my heart I do.

I respect you, I know you, and I see you.

And it fills me with pure joy to know that

You love me, with all your heart you do,

You respect me, you know me and you see me.

I vow that this marriage will stay with me for as long as I shall live,

I vow that every day will be a conscious effort to cherish and celebrate this union,

And I vow that my love for you is

Eternal.
