The Silky Sheets of Silence

Slip into the silky sheets of silence My Dear.

Whispered the Universe.

The only sounds to keep me company were the gentle thud of my feet and the waves of cars passing by, their music a mirror of the ocean.

For I know your eyes are burning from floods of tears. Salt stings but suffering subsides.

Focus, My Dear, On the fairy floss sky. Swirly pinks and curly purples. Let it soothe you. Let it consume you. Let it take you.

She said as she played with my hair with breeze for hands.

I thought about how seamless it would be to step in front of the armada of buzzing cars. Where would they take me?

Would I finally meet God? What would I ask Her?

Or would I instead meet the Devil and dance with him instead? I hope he knows some Tik Tok routines.

Or would I become a rabbit, hidden in shrubbery and sunset, ecstatic to find a fresh patch of grass or soft soil to build my burrow?

Maybe I’d dissolve back into the universe, my consciousness would join a nebula a couple of light-years away, and I would have the privilege to decorate the heavens for whatever lucky being happens to catch a glance.

But I also want to know what tomorrow will bring. What will I have for breakfast? How am I going to do my hair? What will the sky look like tomorrow?

It was a wintry night, but the universe did not want it to feel so. It didn’t feel like any particular season or time. It just felt. I just felt.

The sun had set long ago but the sky remained lit. He wasn’t ready to leave me just yet, nor I him. So I ate my carrot sticks, observing and admiring the last of his rays, giving me a rushed embrace.

Crunch. Thud. Whoosh. Thud.

Crunch. Thud. Whoosh. Thud.

My eyes are tired! I cry out to her. They fry and sizzle, they ache and bruise. They are red and hot, it isn't going away. My eyes are tired.

But your Eye.

She replies.

What does your Eye say?

That I am Awake and Alive.
