Everyone often confuses literacy and education. They may seem like the same thing after all, isn’t being able to read and write being educated? Isn’t solving algebraic problems education? Sure! But it is objectively shallow to think that this is all that there is to it.
Having degrees or letters after your name is a sign of literacy, not education. Of course, being literate is an essential part of education, as literacy is essential to communicate and understand, and without literate people, the world would descend into chaos.
But the real issue is when academia and education begin to be viewed as one thing.
Education is a weapon, and a powerful one at that.
It isn’t about Pythagoras’ theorem in Maths, but seeing the perfection of the world through the lenses of maths and realising just how calculated everything in this universe is.
It isn’t about analysing language techniques in Shakespeare's’ work in English, but about appreciating the critical perspective he had on his society, and on himself, and applying that same curious thinking to your very own life.
It isn’t about being able to throw a shot put properly in PE, but being able to appreciate the magic of human body and learning what you’re truly capable of, even in times of self-doubt.
Education goes far beyond the classroom.
It is about your path to wisdom and enlightenment, if you choose to take it.
It is about learning to self reflect, criticise and question your very own essence and everything you stand for.
It is about seeing the world from different perspectives without any bas or hesitation, approaching every difference with pure curiosity.
It is about wanting to learn, wherever possible and whenever possible, and using lessons to improve yourself.
Education is infinite and so very beautiful. I’ve fallen in love with it and through loving education, I have loved myself.
